The God Centered Relationship.. More Than A Concept

I read this quote the other day. It said,  ”A woman’s heart should be so in tune with God’s that a man should have to chase Him to have her.”  I liked this quote so much that I really thought about it and expanded upon it. I said, “I do know this.. the woman I marry will...

I woke up this morning thinking about how grateful I was to have the ability and opportunity to be here one more day. What’s one day?  Well when you think of it on a macro level today could be the day you set the wheels in motion for something great to occur in your life.   You could meet someone who’s impact could catapult you to your preordained purpose.  What’s one day?  Today could be the day that you help someone accomplish something or encourage someone to be greater.  It could be the day you change the life of someone else with a kind word, a smile, or a helping hand.  What’s one day? I just want to encourage you to make the most of your life.  Tomorrow isn’t promised and we have a unknown amount of time to make an impact.

A Lasting Investment : Joel Osteen

All of us are who we are today because others invested in us. I think about all the people in my family that have invested in me. My grandfather was very disciplined. He had a very strong work ethic. He taught me by example the importance of being diligent and giving every job my very best. My grandmother was so full of joy. I never saw her upset. She constantly had a song of praise coming up out of her heart. She is a big part of who I am today. She’s one of the main reasons why I smile practically all the time.

Growing up, my mother not only loved and cared for us children, but every day before we left for school she would say, “Father, thank You that my children have Your favor wherever they go.” I learned to expect God’s favor from my mother. You know what I’m doing today? Telling other people to believe for God’s favor.

My father was constantly telling me how great he thought I was and how I could do anything. He took time to mentor me. He was busy, but he still gave me his attention. As a little boy, he used to go up to the hospital to visit people that were sick. He would always take me with him. He would have me join hands with the family when we prayed.

As a teenager, I would come down to the church during the summer and sit in meetings with him at the office. Half the time I didn’t know what was going on. But on the way home, he’d always explain it. “Joel, this is what we were doing. This is the reason we were doing it.” He didn’t have to. He had a lot going on, but he understood that he had a responsibility to pass on everything he possibly could. My father did his best to teach me everything he knew and sometimes things he didn’t know.

I think about how in Victoria’s family they’ve had a special recipe that’s been in the family line for four or five generations. It’s called Senator Russell’s Sweet Potatoes. They are the best sweet potatoes in the world. They’ve got a crust of cinnamon, sugar and nuts. We don’t even like the sweet potatoes. We just like the crust! But what happened is that somebody came up with that great recipe generations back. They could have thought, “This is my special dish. I’m just going to keep it to myself.” No, they were living with the mindset that “I’ve got to pass down everything good I possibly can.” So one day that mother taught her daughter the recipe and that daughter taught her daughter. Eventually, it got down to Georgine, my mother–in–law. She taught her daughter, Victoria. Now, every Thanksgiving, Victoria and our daughter are in the kitchen making Senator Russell’s Sweet Potatoes.

Let me ask you, are you transferring your wisdom, your experiences, your shortcuts, your recipes down to the next generation so they can start ahead of you?

Are you transferring your wisdom & experiences to the next generation?

Just the other day, I was talking to our fourteen–year–old son Jonathan about how to prepare a message, how to study and communicate. I thought, “I’ve been doing this for ten years. I want to make sure he at least knows what I know.” You may think, “Well, Joel. I don’t have any special expertise. I don’t know that much.” Sure, you do. You know about life. You know what works and what doesn’t. You know the mistakes you’ve made and what you’ve learned from them. You have experience. You have skills. Many times, what we take for granted is a big deal to someone else.

But so often today, instead of investing in our children and giving them the attention they need, we give them activities. We’re running them here and there, taking them to this activity, getting them back to that special function and then to another activity. It’s like we’re running a bus service. We sit back and watch them play sports, watch them do ballet, and watch them in the school play. And that’s fine. I played a lot of sports. But if we’re not careful, we will substitute activity for attention.

Understand, your children need you more than they need another activity. Studies tell us that by the age of five, our children have already developed their sense of reasoning. By the age of twelve, 95% of who they are and what they believe has already been established. Don’t let the television be a babysitter for your children. Don’t allow sports, ballet and band take from the time that you could spend with them and impart into them.

Think about how high our children would go if we would all live like this. This is the way it’s supposed to be. Every generation should build on the next. My children shouldn’t have the same struggles that I’ve struggled with. They’re starting at a higher level. There’s more wisdom, more depth, more experience in our family line. They should take what I know and run with it.

Lou Holtz, the famous football coach said, “When I die, my accomplishments will eventually be forgotten. But what I’ve invested in my players will continue to live on.” The best legacy is not what we leave for people. It’s what we leave in people. We all have things that we’ve learned: skills, talents, life experiences, wisdom. You have a wealth of knowledge that God has entrusted you with. You are not supposed to keep that to yourself. You should be passing that on to somebody else. We have a responsibility to transfer what we know to the next generation. Are you taking time to invest in your children? And if you don’t have any children, how about your nieces and nephews? Your neighbors? The kid down the street?

You and I have an opportunity to leave a mark that cannot be erased. Yes, eventually we’re all going to die, but when you invest in somebody else, you will continue to live on. Your life can have influence for generations to come if you will take time to invest in people.

You and I have an opportunity to leave a mark that cannot be erased

The only way this is going to happen is if we are taking time to invest in them. We have to transfer what we know into them. Really, I believe the best inheritance we can leave them is what we have put in them, not what we leave for them. Don’t get me wrong. I’m all for leaving resources, but that’s not all I’m going to leave. I’m going to make sure I teach them everything I know about life, about ministry, about marriage, business, economics. Anything I know I’m going to pour it into them. I’m constantly telling my children, “You’re not only getting everything I have, not only everything I know, but you’re getting everything Granddaddy imparted into me, everything Grandmother gave me. They put it in me, and I’m going to do my best to pour it into you.”

My prayer and declaration for all of our children is that they are going to start where we finish, and God is going to take them places we’ve never even dreamed of. Our children are going to be mighty in the land. Remember, the only investments that are going to last are our investments in others. We are all leaving a legacy, either intentional or unintentional. When it’s unintentional, we just live life and wait to see what’s going to happen. But when it’s intentional, we’re constantly looking for ways that we can invest in somebody else, leaving them with the best of what we have and know.

Medicine, Water, and Faith You Can Do The Impossible

A while back my mother gave me a series of audio discs to listen to about healing.  It was shortly after she was diagnosed with lupus and we as a family decided that no disease or diagnosis would ever stop the path to purpose God has for our family.  We began to pray and touch and agree as a family that my mother would be healed and that God’s plan for her life and our family would come to pass.  I thank God everyday that he healed her and continues to bless her with good health.

When I listened to the audio recordings the person on the cds spoke about how faith relates to healing.  You see he said the word of God was like medicine and that when we prayed we were having a consult with a supernatural all powerful physician in God that could heal any affliction.  I began to think about that in practical application and I began to ask myself why we don’t tap into the power God provides us more often.  All signs pointed to faith or a lack thereof.

In Matthew 14:22-33 the disciples were sent on a boat to a town by Jesus. It was a dark and stormy night and the disciples thought they were seeing a ghost when Jesus appeared to them walking on the sea.  Jesus saw they were afraid and told them not to be scared and that he was with them.  God has to take the storm of fear out of us before he can take the storms out of our lives.

Peter trying to really believe this was happening asked Jesus to call him on the water if this was really happening.  Jesus didn’t say, “No” he simply said, “come.”   You see God calls us to do the impossible by faith! It must have taken a ton of faith for Peter to step out of a boat onto the water but the bible says Peter did it and walked on water.

And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.  But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. - Matthew 14: 29, 30

Isn’t it interesting how Peter was fine until he took his eyes off Jesus?  How often have you been given a vision and taken your eyes off the vision to look at all the obstacles and began to sink in your own sea of doubt and fear? As long as he had faith, he did impossible things to do with God’s help.  He kept his eyes on Jesus and walked on water.  When he looked around at the world, he started believing that the storm was going to defeat him.  He lost faith. He took his eyes off Jesus, and he began to sink.  That’s when Peter uttered one of the shortest prayers in the bible, “Lord, save me.”  Everyone needs to say that prayer.  We ALL need Jesus to save us. He is our only hope.  Jesus told Peter he should not have doubted.  When they got back they worshiped Jesus as the Son of God. We have to remember to thank him for the things we accomplish.

So why don’t we operate with more power. Well we forget to take our medicine.  When we are sick we go to the doctor, tell him what’s wrong, and take what the doctor prescribes; but when we are spiritually or emotionally ill we fail to read God’s word and consult with the doctor and architect of life.  It’s no wonder why we operate the way we do.  We have no power. We are like Peter paying attention to the storms of life all around us. We sink.  Yet it is when we keep our eyes on our father in heaven that we are able to walk on water and accomplish the impossible.  What is it that you don’t think you can accomplish? I’m here to tell you that the power to do anything can be done with faith.

This past weekend my mother graduated from college with her Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing.  She went back to school to finish after putting 2 children through college.  She received nothing but A’s her entire time in the program.  The entire family cheered for her, my dad held down the housework and my sister and I became her peer editors.  I  have to tell you that I celebrated her graduation as I would my own and I’m very proud of my mother.  I don’t tell you to brag or sound arrogant.  I share this for no other reason other than to tell you God can do the impossible if you keep your eyes on him.  If she would have listened to the world or doctors she may not have decided to go back to school but when you keep your eyes on God you can do anything. I believe that and I hope you do as well!

Where’s Our Focus : What Do You Value

I work in health-care and many times I see things that remind me of the greatness of God. I’ve seen people healed from affliction, triumphant against terrible disease, and hope restored to family and friends. There are other times I’m reminded about my own blessings when I hear or see the story of some of those who are stricken with illness. I think how lucky and blessed I am to have my health and that my family and friends are healthy and safe as well. Today I was visiting one of the offices I cover on Chicago’s north side. I sat down with the leadership and they shared they see about 7000 patients of which 2500 are HIV positive. When I heard that I was a bit taken aback. The number was quite frightening and a bit jarring to say the least.  The disease is running rampant in our community.  I sat in the clinic and noticed most of the patients walking in and out of the clinic were black men.   I turned on my radio this afternoon and heard the story of multiple murders and shootings.  Two people killed at Old Navy, two more shot on the Dan Ryan, and multiple killings in Englewood are viciously taking the lives of young people daily.  Again it caught me off guard.  I began to think about God again and just how blessed I’ve been.  How many days and nights he kept me safe from many things and how we really don’t have much time to get this “life” thing right.

So today I encourage you to really go after God’s purpose for your life; whatever that may be. He is calling for His people to truly rely and trust Him. Now is the time God is expecting us to step out on faith and trust that He will provide for that vision you have inside of you. God will order the steps of your path if you just stand on His word and walk by faith. Increase your prayer time, increase your faith, and increase your worship and wait for the change God will make in your life. God will get his glory anyway whether we come willingly on our knees or knocked down by life’s challenges. Just think despite all you’re going through, or what you are not going through, remember things could always be worse. We just have to grow in our knowledge of who God is in our lives. You are pregnant with possibility and opportunity you just have to trust God and allow Him to shape you into who you are supposed to be. 2 Peter 1:3-4 says “His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. This scripture should motivate you to grow your knowledge of God because it says in that knowledge and His divine power we are given EVERYTHING we need for life.  What are you focused on?

For a long time I was focused on corporate success.  I wanted to change the world after I made my millions.  I wanted to do God’s work with the resources I made from my financial success but somewhere along the quest I forgot who I was working for.  I allowed the goal of financial greatness overtake my vision of God and the role of Lord he has over my life.    Many years ago I had a conversation with Rev. James King who was my 1st real mentor in ministry after my parents.  He told me then that sloth wasn’t necessarily laziness but yet an alternative was that it could be that you are so busy with the work of church that you neglect to feed your own spirit adequately and properly.  It’s interesting that despite me knowing that fact I still somehow fell into rut of spiritual sloth.  I would sing, go to church, work on campaigns, speak at schools but wasn’t properly taking the time I needed with the Lord myself.  I’m glad I was able to regain my focus cause without God I could have all the money in the world and do all the service I could but still miss out on true joy and the opportunity to act with real God given power.  What do you value most?  I just want to entreat you to find joy in the Lord.  He can and will do exactly what you need Him to do. He can empower you to achieve the purposeful work He has for you.

God Bless,

Be Young, Saved, and Fly…
